The .308 actually can be loaded hotter than the nato standard, therefore all nato 7.62x51 can safely be used in a .308. WebNo, it does not. The 7.62 NATO = 7.62 X 51 in size. The AK-47 shoots a shorter cartridge which is 7.62 X 39. If I remember right, the 7.62 NATO is also a .308 diameter bullet and the X39 is a .311 diameter.
